Micromobility Safety Tips

Bike Safety Tips

Always Lock Your Ride!

Never leave your bike or scooter unlocked and unattended — not even for a moment. Thieves act fast, and these are often “crimes of opportunity.” Don’t give them the chance.

Lock Tips:

  • Invest in the strongest lock you can afford — U-locks are your best bet.
  • For extra security, pair your U-lock with a sturdy chain or cable lock.
  • Always secure your bike or scooter to a fixed rack that’s bolted into concrete. Free-standing or self-locked vehicles are easy targets.

See Something, Say Something!

If Your Bike or Scooter Is Stolen

  • Contact the UCR Police Department at (951) 827-5222 as soon as possible.

If You Witness a Theft

  • Call 911 immediately.
  • Tell the dispatcher your location and what’s happening.
  • Remember as many details about the suspect as you can — this helps with police reports.

Important Safety Note

  • Never confront someone you believe has your bike or scooter — it could escalate into a dangerous situation.
  • Give UCPD as much information as possible. Keep in mind, many bikes look alike, so appearances can be misleading.
  • If you have registered your property with TAPS, call them to get the serial number at (951) 827-8277.
